Home for aged blind women

Today we had spent some time in an old age home of needy blind Grannies. It is run under Poona Blind Men's Association (PBMA) which works extensively with the blind population of India. The name of this particular home is "Shirdi Sai Baba Home for Aged Blind Women of PBMA" that gives shelter to the shelterless and destitute blind old ladies. It is located at Nanded Phata, Village - Dhayri on Sinhagad road, Pune. We are amazed by the infrastructure and the facilities available there. The home now accommodates 43 blind ladies aged between 45 to 91. Not only they are provided with a decent shelter but also they have all facilities for a happy living and that too, at absolutely free of cost. Morning tea /coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, milk before sleep - all are served timely. The Grannies also get themselves involved in useful and productive activities like knitting, stitching, other handicrafts, bhajans, storytelling, reading Braille books, evening common 'Arati'. They also enjoy music and T. V programmes. Most of the times, radio is a good companion of many of them. Regular visit by doctor(s) takes care of their health issues with a resident clinical assistant. Hospitalizations, when required, are referred to various city hospitals and the expenses are borne by the Organization. It was really a pleasure to have detailed discussions with Mrs. Sonal Bramhanwade Patre madam and Dr. S. Kulkarni on various topics and issues related to social services in our country.
